Active Schools
An Active Schools team has recently been established in the Western Isles. This team consists of an Active Schools Team Leader/Sports Development, three full time Primary Active School Co-ordinators and five Secondary Active School Co-ordinators working one day per week.
The fundamental aim of the Active Schools Network is to offer youngsters the motivation and opportunities to adopt active, healthy lifestyles now and into adulthood. Active Schools also aims to introduce more physical activity into their daily lives through active play, travel and dance. The statistics relating to the health and well being of our children are very worrying; for example, between 1995-2003, obesity levels amongst children aged 2-10 years rose by 25%. Active Schools will help in confronting these issues.
The Management Team is comprised of officers from CnES – Sustainable Communities, Integrated Community Schools, Health Promotion and sportscotland.
The Western Isles has been split into three Cluster Areas, these are Harris/Westside, Uist and Barra and Greater Broadbay.
Over the coming months these pages will allow us to update the community on a whole range of projects that Active Schools will be working on – including training opportunities, event etc.
Please check the page regularly for updates!
