Mini Motiv8 Club
At the end of each term Active Schools prepares an audit return for sportscotland outlining the extra curricular physical activity opportunities in each school. This is based on information that you have given us and is returned to each school for information.
At the end of our first term audits, it was clear that P1 - P3 were least provided for across the board. Unless we can engage young people in physical activity, many will already be unenthusiastic by the time more opportunities become available for them at P4 and beyond.
Over the next couple of years a national initiative called 'Basic Moves' will look to fill this gap. This looks to develop the core physical skills - running, throwing, catching, balance, co-ordination etc in a fun environment.
In the interim period, Active Schools has begun to offer a similar session based on imaginative play. This will be offered to a range of schools based on the audit returns completed each term and is being delivered as an extra curricular activity. Initially, we have targeted schools we feel could benefit most, based on the sportscotland audit return and an assessment of their other facilities and provision undertaken by the local Active Schools Co-ordinator. We will roll out the programme out on that basis over the next two terms.
The lesson plans will be available to download online and are designed to be very simple and require minimal equipment and preparation time. We would be happy to support any school not currently targeted, should there be a teacher, school assistant or volunteer parent interested in delivering these sessions as an after school activity. Although based on sound physiological principles, there is no requirement for anyone delivering these sessions to have a PE background - it is much more important that you can empathise with children in an uninhibited way!
If you require any more information, please contact your Active Schools Co-ordinator for more details.
