Dena came off her bike on Wenesday. The photo of her scratched helmet shows how lucky she was to be wearing it! (No luck involved, just good common sense!)

Strong headwinds last night left the team running 3/4 hour late arriving at Ludag. Once on Barra they cycled half way round and bunked down for the night in the new Fire Station building.

8.00am this morning they continued their cycle around Barra and across to South Uist. At 12.00 noon the cyclists have just left Kildonan Museum heading for Lionaclete School in time for lunch.

Superb weather in the Uists today. Lots of sun cream being used.

Everything was going to plan, despite the strong headwind, until we reached the Balivanich Office! Their hospitality resulted in us falling slightly behind schedule! The following photographs were taken at the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Balivanich Office - many thanks to all those who helped and provided lunch.

With some help from Bill Howatt, Angus Lamont, Maria Mackay, Gordon MacLeod and the Special Class from the Nicolson and Stornoway Primary the cycle got off to a good start.

Despite the strong head wind, good progress was made throughout the day.

Thanks to all at the Scaladale Centre and the Tarbert Office and those who provided lunch.

CHARITY CYCLE RUN IN AID OF
LOCAL MACMILLAN NURSE APPEAL

Dena MacLeod, Kenny Smith and Catherine MacRitchie will be cycling the full distance of 330 miles.

The cycle is being dedicated to Kenny's father, Dena's mother and Catherine's mother who all passed away recently as a result of cancer. They all know how valuable the support of MacMillan Nurses are during such a difficult time. The reason for undertaking the sponsored cycle is to help fund a service they all know many families throughout the Islands will benefit from.

Dena, Kenny and Catherine have spent many hours in training for the event and would appreciate as much support, in the way of sponsorship, as possible. This can be in the form of directly sponsoring one of themselves or any of the Accompanying Cyclists or youth groups. Donations can also be made into our account in the Bank of Scotland. The account name is "MacMillan Miles through the Hebrides"

Accompanying the cyclists for the six days is John Campbell. He will be providing back-up support using a vehicle kindly donated for the event by the Comhairle.

The Charity Ride is also supported by Alex Dan Cycles, Safeway, The Co-op and Health Promotion.

The cycle ride on Saturday is planned to finish at the Comhairle Offices in Stornoway where the MacMillan Nurses Committee have very kindly offered to prepare a reception for those taking part in the final stages.

CHARITY CYCLE RUN IN AID OF
LOCAL MACMILLAN NURSE APPEAL

This charity bike run throughout the Hebrides will take place from the 21 to 26 May 2001.  All the money that is raised will go towards a local appeal to fund a Chemotherapy Nurse.

The mileage covered will be 330 miles and we hope to raise in the region of £10,000. Three of us will be doing the whole ride and we will be joined at various stages by our colleagues throughout the islands.

We are keen to encourage families, local Youth Clubs and Schools to accompany us along various stages of the route.  This will give others an opportunity to raise funds, partly for the MacMillan Nurse Appeal and partly for the Youth Club, School or other appropriate organisation.

The final route plan will be issued once the route is finalised, following our ongoing discussions with Police road safety officers.
