Young Person's Entitlement Card

Fact Sheet

Aged 11 – 26 and live in the Western Isles Area?

As from 8th January 2007, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar will no longer be taking applications for the Western Isles Young Scot card.  We will be replacing the old card with the new National Entitlement Card.

The old Western Isles Young Scot card can be used by all current card holders but will be phased out over the next year.  The National Entitlement Card will have all the same features as the Western Isles card but will have many more features added.

Train Boat Bus

The New National Entitlement Card

The New National Entitlement Card is a free electronic smartcard for young people aged 11 – 26.

Travel

The card will enable young people to get cheaper transport on buses, trains and ferries. If you are 16, 17 or 18 then you are entitled to:

  • A third off adult single fares on buses all over Scotland
  • A free Young Person’s Railcard, cutting up to one-third off train fares
  • Two free return ferry journeys to the mainland if you live on an island.

At the moment not all of the transport companies have the special equipment needed to read these cards. However, we don’t want you to have to wait until they do to start claiming your discounts, so in the meantime you will receive additional cards with your national entitlement card which can be used to get transport offers.

Young Scot Discounts & Services

If you do not fall into the above age category then you will still be able to apply for your NEC and take advantage of its many benefits very soon.  Unfortunately you will not get the transport concessions available to 16-18 year olds, but you will still be able to get the usual great discounts and services from Young Scot!

Where to apply for your card?

The Internal Strategy section at the Comhairle will be visiting schools over the coming months to help young people sign up for the card.  If you are no longer in school then you can contact any of the local offices listed below to get your application form.
