Election Office
Scottish Parliament And Local Government Elections
3 May 2007
On 3 May 2007 elections will be held for both Local Government (the Comhairle) and for the Scottish Parliament.
Voting in elections is your chance to help decide who will make decisions on issues that affect you every day. Councils (local authorities) are responsible for providing a great range of services that touch on every aspect of your life, such as nurseries, schools, parks, refuse collection, town planning, economic development, social services, housing services, road maintenance and libraries.
By voting in the local government elections, you will have a say in who makes decisions on how your council tax is spent and the services you receive from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
By voting in the Scottish Parliament elections you will help decide who will represent residents of the Western Isles in the Scottish Parliament, as Constituency Highlands and Islands MSPs for the Western Isles and Regional MSPs for the Highlands and Islands area. The Scottish Parliament decides on matters that include education, health, the environment, transport, tourism and economic development.
Your vote influences who gets elected and, in turn, how Scotland is governed together with the delivery of public services.
The following pages provide information on both elections: how Local Government and the Scottish Parliament affect your life; how to vote; where to get further information.
