Wave Power Potential Offers Great Benefits

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar today warmly welcomed an announcement by the Energy Minister Brian Wilson of proposals for a cluster of wave power stations in the Western Isles.

Convener Alex MacDonald said: “These are exciting proposals which potentially offer great benefits for the Western Isles. Since the Comhairle launched the Energy Innovation Zone proposals last year, we have come a very long way with the windfarm announcement from AMEC/British Energy and now these proposals from Wavegen and Scottish and Southern PLC. I am delighted that the DTI is maintaining the momentum that was generated during our talks in the summer and we now look forward to seeing further details of the Wavegen proposals.
It is particularly encouraging that Mr. Wilson highlighted the key feature of the possible use of the Arnish fabrication yard for manufacturing processes. This would provide a significant and welcome boost for local employment.”
