Introduction

Community is an important part of life in the Western Isles and social infrastructure is seen as integral to community vitality and community regeneration. Within the Western Isles the provision of infrastructure such as public transport, health care and education is focussed and co-ordinated from Stornoway. Recent developments have been focussed on new multi-purpose community schools, which combine the provision of a range of social infrastructure, such as leisure facilities, educational opportunities (for children and adults) and health within one building or a cluster of buildings on the same site i.e. the redevelopment of the Sir E Scott School, Tarbert, Harris.
