The Comhairle’s tenants have a new landlord from Tuesday 12th September. Around 1800 homes have transferred from the Comhairle to the Hebridean Housing Partnership.

The transfer will mean increased investment in the houses, rent guarantees, long term planning and an increased role by tenants in key decision. Tenants in the Western Isles have had considerable input into HHP’s Business Plan through the work of the Western Isles Residents Forum, telephone surveys and the contribution of the Tenant Board Members. HHP will now work to deliver the promises made to tenants contained within the Business Plan.

HHP Chairman George Lonie said:
“This is a new start for housing in the Western Isles and represents the biggest ever investment in social housing in the Western Isles. I am looking forward to exciting times but there is a lot of hard work ahead. We will now turn our attention to service delivery and to our commitment to work with tenants to modernise existing houses and deliver improved housing services.

Improvements will not just be to the fabric of tenant’s homes but we shall build on the Comhairle’s excellent work in involving tenants in determining service priorities.

HHP also plans to build 40 to 50 new houses for rent for the next five years to help meet the shortage of affordable homes in the Western Isles.”

Last year the Comhairle’s tenants voted in favour of transfer. There was a 69% ‘YES’ vote. HHP will invest £100m in tenants’ homes over the next 30 years. A high priority will be improved heating systems and levels of insulation to provide warm homes for our tenants. HHP will also bring all its stock up to the Scottish Housing Quality Standard by 2015.
