Private Sector Housing Grant

At present, the demand for Improvement and Repair Grants to repair private homes is significantly higher than the resources made available for this purpose by the Scottish Government.

As a result the Comhairle is unable to take any new enquiries or grant applications for the foreseeable future.  The only exception is for Adaptation Grants where applications can still be made to adapt a disabled person’s home.

Currently, there are major changes in the legislation for Housing Grants in development which are likely to be implemented within the next financial year.  This changing situation makes it difficult to say when the Comhairle will be able to start taking new enquiries and applications again.

Details of the new system are currently awaited from the Scottish Government. Information received so far indicates there is likely to be a move away from grant awards, towards owners becoming more responsible for the maintenance and repair of their own homes.

Grants may still be available but they may become a grant of last resort.  Owners will need to demonstrate that they cannot borrow, or fund the repairs out of their own resources, before a grant award would be considered for the proposed works.

Full details of the new housing grants scheme will be available on the Comhairle’s web pages as soon as the new legislation is finalised.

The Scottish Government’s web site has a number of links which provide further details on Private Sector Housing topics.

Adaptation Grants

Adaptation Grants are available to enable people to have their homes adapted to meet their specific needs. All cases must be supported by an independent referral from an Occupational Therapist or in some cases, Social Services, to demonstrate the works were necessary on the grounds of medical need. Works can involve improving access to and from properties, adapting bathrooms or shower-rooms, or any other works to adapt the home.

If your home requires such work, then to start the process you should contact any of the following organisations:
