Mobile Libraries
The Mobile Library Service supplies books to those people
who are unable to use a branch library because of distance, age
or disability.
Three vehicles serve communities in Lewis, Harris, and the Uists,
(generally at three weekly intervals).
Each van carries a variety of stock to cater for all ages and
interests. In addition to new books purchased for the mobiles some
stock is exchanged at regular intervals to provide as much choice
as possible.
Although only a limited amount of stock can be carried on the
vans the resources of the whole of Western Isles Libraries are at
the disposal of users.
The Request Service gives access to most titles in Western
Isles stock and through the inter-lending scheme to that of other
libraries nationwide. No charge is made for use of this service.
Whenever possible requested material will be delivered on the mobile
library's next visit. If supply of inter- lending material does
not coincide with a mobile visit this may be posted direct to the
readers home.
Large Print Books are available on all mobile libraries
for those who have difficulty reading normal sized type.
Local History and Gaelic Each van carries a small selection
of local history and Gaelic books. Material not stocked on the van
is available through the request service.
Spoken Word Users of the Mobile Library service have access
to a wide range of popular and classic fiction on cassette.
