Demand for Gaelic Artistic and Cultural Products and Services

AL05.01

3*

The Director of Education and Leisure Services submitted a Report regarding a research report by Dr Allan Sproull and Mr Douglas Chalmers of Glasgow Caledonian University. The executive summary of the research report was appended to the Report, summarising aims of the study, the levels of consumption of Gaelic artistic and cultural activities, the factors enabling or constraining consumption, the impact of Gaelic artistic and cultural activity and views on the future role of Gaelic arts and culture. It was indicated that the research had highlighted the centrality of Gaelic arts and cultural activities in the Gaelic language development process. It was noted that the interdependence of education and the arts and culture in Gaelic language development had been identified during the research.

It was reported that the Gaelic Development Sub-Committee had recommended that a seminar or conference be held in 1998 to discuss various issues related particularly to the tourism aspect of Gaelic.

It was agreed to recommend that:

(1) the proposed conference or seminar include consideration of Gaelic arts and culture and links to the media;

(2) a joint meeting of the Arts and Leisure and Gaelic Development Sub-Committees be held at an early date.

It was further agreed that the Director of Education and Leisure Services submit a Report regarding the development of a programme of cultural events to be held throughout the calendar year on the basis of sponsorship or encouragement by the Comhairle.
