With reference to item 3 of the Minute of Meeting of 26 March 1998 the Director of Corporate Services submitted a Report indicating the progress to date in implementing the Comhairle's decision to hold a Cultural Tourism Seminar. The Report detailed proposals for the seminar to be held on 3 December 1998 and appended a draft Programme for the event. It was agreed to recommend approval of the draft Programme as detailed in the Report. Arising out of consideration of this matter, the Sub-Committee expressed its concern in relation to the delay in implementing the Comhairle's decision to foster and develop linguistic and economic links with Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in relation to joint projects, cultural exchanges and other issues of mutual interest. It was agreed to recommend that the Chief Executive be authorised to investigate how links with Newry and Mourne District Council and Derry City Council, Northern Ireland, and with Clare County Council, Republic of Ireland, which had previously been established could be further developed. It was also agreed to recommend that consideration be given to establishing links with Donegal, Republic of Ireland as being the area closest to Na h-Eileanan an Iar in terms of language, culture and economy. |
