Tribute: Mrs Chirstie Bannerman

 

The Chairman, on behalf of the Comhairle, extended congratulations to Mrs Chirstie Bannerman from Stornoway who had celebrated her 100th Birthday and wished her many happy years to come.

Tribute: Ms Nan Cunningham

 

The Chairman referred to the recent death of Ms Nan Cunningham, a former Teacher at The Nicolson Institute and, on behalf of the Comhairle, extended condolences to Ms Cunningham's family and friends in their bereavement.

The Chairman, on behalf of the Comhairle, extended congratulations to Mr Alexander Matheson who had been named as the new Chairman of Highlands and Islands Airports.

Tribute: Mr Matthew Maciver

 

The Chairman, on behalf of the Comhairle, extended congratulations to Mr Matthew Maciver from Point who had recently been named as the new Chief Executive and Registrar of the General Teaching Council for Scotland.

Tribute: Breasclete Village

 

The Chairman, on behalf of the Comhairle, congratulated Breasclete Park who had brought honour to themselves by being named as the top crofting township for 2000.

Tribute: Ms Annag Macleod

 

The Chairman, on behalf of the Comhairle, congratulated Ms Annag Macleod, from Eoligarry in Barra who had just passed her Air Transport pilot's licence and referred to the fact that it was particularly pleasing that the Comhairle was able to assist Ms Macleod with her training course.

The Chairman referred to the sudden death of Councillor George Lonie's father and, on behalf of the Comhairle, extended condolences to Mr Lonie and his family.

    Mr Donald Manford, seconded by Mr Ronald J Mackinnon, moved the approval of Item 117.

    Mr Donald J MacSween, seconded by Mr David Blaney, moved as an amendment that the Comhairle write requesting the Highlands and Islands Integrated Transport Forum to carry out a survey into the views of the population of Lewis and Harris on whether there should be Sunday ferry sailings throughout the Western Isles.

    On the matter being put to a vote, the motion received the majority of the votes cast and became the finding of the meeting.

Policy and Resources

    The Convener drew to Members' attention that the Policy and Resources Committee had recommended that recommendation (2) of Item 203 of the Minute of Meeting of the Development Services Committee of 22 November 2000 be deleted and that for the sake of consistency the Comhairle do not support the use of the term "Outer Hebrides" but would support the use of the term "Western Isles" in future tourism marketing.

    It was agreed to approve the recommendation.
