It was agreed to appoint Mr Norman L Macdonald as Chairman of the Committee.

   

MINUTES

Shortleeting Sub-Committee

The Minute of Meeting of the Shortleeting Sub-Committee of 26 May 1999 was noted.

   

TEACHING STAFF

   

It was agreed that the public, including the press, be excluded from the meeting during consideration of the following items, on the grounds that exempt information in terms of Schedule 7A of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 as defined in Standing Order 26(a) would be disclosed, namely, information relating to employees of or applicants to become employees of the Comhairle would be disclosed.

Post of Headteacher, The Nicolson Institute (Combined School)

The Director of Corporate Services submitted the following papers concerning the post of Headteacher, The Nicolson Institute (combined school):

(1) Job Advertisement;

(2) Job Description;

(3) Person Specification; and

(4) Report of Applications Received.

The Committee noted the documents submitted and proceeded to interview the following candidates, it being further noted that four candidates had been shortleeted and one candidate subsequently withdrawn:

Mr John Sharkey

Mr Ken Trewartha

Mr Donald J Macdonald

After the interviews and a full discussion of the merits of the candidates, it was agreed to recommend to the Acting Director of Education and Leisure Services that the post of Headteacher, The Nicolson Institute (combined school) be offered to Mr Ken Trewartha, who held the post of Depute Rector, Kirkland High School and Community College.

   

Mr Trewartha was invited into the Meeting and informed that the Committee would be recommending that he be appointed to the post of Headteacher (The Nicolson Institute).

Mr Trewartha confirmed his willingness to accept an offer of appointment to the post of Headteacher, The Nicolson Institute, from the Acting Director of Education and Leisure Services following the Committee's recommendation.

Depute Headteacher (Academic), The Nicolson Institute (Combined School)

The Director of Corporate Services submitted the following papers concerning the post of Depute Headteacher (Academic), The Nicolson Institute (Combined School)

(1) Job Advertisement;

(2) Job Description;

(3) Person Specification; and

(4) Report of Applications Received.

The Committee noted the documents received and proceeded to interview the following candidates, four candidates having been shortleeted and one candidate having subsequently withdrawn:

Mr Thomas R Clark

Mr Donald A Macleod

The Committee also considered an application from Mr John Sharkey, who had previously been interviewed for the post of Headteacher.

After the interviews and a discussion of the merits of the candidates it was agreed to recommend that the post of Depute Headteacher (Academic), The Nicolson Institute (Combined School) be offered to Mr Thomas R Clark

Mr Clark was invited into the Meeting and informed that the Committee would be recommending that he be appointed to the post of Depute Headteacher (Academic) at The Nicolson Institute.

Mr Clark confirmed his willingness to accept an offer of appointment from the Acting Director of Education and Leisure Services to the post following the Committee's recommendation.

Post of Depute Headteacher (Vocational)

The Director of Corporate Services submitted the following papers concerning the post of Depute Headteacher (Vocational), The Nicolson Institute (Combined School)

(1) Job Advertisement;

(2) Job Description;

(3) Person Specification; and

(4) Report of Applications Received.

The Committee noted the documents submitted and proceeded to interview the following candidates:

Mr James McKeenan

Mrs Gladys J C Montgomery

The Committee also considered an application submitted by Mr John Sharkey, who had previously been interviewed for the post of Headteacher, and Mr Donald A Macleod who had previously been interviewed for the post of Depute Headteacher (Academic).

   

After the interviews and a full discussion of the merits of the candidates it was agreed to recommend that the post of Depute Headteacher (Vocational) at The Nicolson Institute (Combined School) be offered to Mr Donald A Macleod.

Mr Macleod was invited into the Meeting and informed that the Committee would be recommending that he be appointed to the post of Depute Headteacher (Vocational) at The Nicolson Institute.

Mr Macleod confirmed his willingness to accept an offer of appointment from the Acting Director of Education and Leisure Services to the post following the Sub-Committee's recommendation.

Posts of Assistant Headteacher (Academic), The Nicolson Institute (Combined School)

The Director of Corporate Services submitted the following papers concerning the three posts of Assistant Headteacher (Academic), The Nicolson Institute (Combined School)

(1) Job Advertisement;

(2) Job Description;

(3) Person Specification; and

(4) Report of Applications Received.

The Committee noted the documents submitted and proceeded to interview the following candidates:

Mr Nigel Goodridge

Mr Charles Rigg

Mrs Zena Y Stewart

After the interviews and a full discussion of the merits of the candidates it was agreed to recommend that the post of Assistant Headteacher (Academic), The Nicolson Institute (Combined School) be offered to Mrs Zena Y Stewart.

Mrs Stewart was invited into the Meeting and informed that the Committee would be recommending that she be appointed to the post of Assistant Headteacher (Academic), The Nicholson Institute (combined school).

Mrs Stewart confirmed her willingness to accept an offer of appointment from the Acting Director of Education and Leisure Services to the post.

It was further agreed that the two remaining posts of Assistant Headteacher (Academic) be not filled at this time and that the posts be re-advertised.

Mr Malcolm Maclean

   

The Committee also considered an application for the post from Mrs Gladys J C Montgomery who had been interviewed for the post of Depute Headteacher (Vocational), The Nicolson Institute (combined school).

After the interviews and a full discussion of the merits of the candidates it was agreed to recommend to the Acting Director of Education and Leisure Services that Mr Alasdair Graham be appointed to the post of Assistant Headteacher (Vocational), The Nicholson Institute (combined school).

Mr Graham was invited into the Meeting and informed that the Committee would be recommending that he be appointed to the post of Assistant Headteacher (Vocational), The Nicholson Institute (combined school).

Mr Graham confirmed his willingness to accept an offer of appointment from the Acting Director of Education and Leisure Services to the post following the Committee's recommendation.
