Combined Lews Castle School and The Nicolson Institute Consultation Exercise: Framework

The Director of Corporate Services submitted: (a) a Report concerning the Framework for the Combined Lews Castle School and The Nicolson Institute Consultation Exercise; and (b) a Report on the Consultation Exercise.

It was agreed to:

(1) note that on the basis of the expressions of interest in VER/redundancy received it would be possible to match individuals to posts with the vocational and academic sectors at Principal Teacher Guidance level.

(2) recommend that the Implementation Framework be approved subject to the following amendments:

(a) MM be matched into the post of Principal Teacher, Guidance (Vocational);

(b) the redesignation of the Assistant Head Teacher posts as Assistant Head Teacher (Academic);

(c) in light of the change in circumstances regarding the Interim School Board, the Interim School Board be involved in the appointment of the Head Teacher and two Depute Head Teachers (notwithstanding the fixed term nature of the appointments) in terms of the School Board Legislation; and

(d) the Independent Adviser be Mr G Harcus.

The meeting was adjourned and it was agreed to reconvene on Thursday 4 March 1999 to consider temporary transitional arrangements for maintaining the integrity of the vocational section in the new school.

The Nicolson Institute: Embedding of the Vocational Sector within the Combined School Structure

The Depute Director of Education submitted a Report concerning the arrangements necessary to ensure that the vocational sector is properly embedded within the Nicolson Institute Combined School structure.

The Director of Corporate Services submitted for information a Report concerning volunteers for redundancy following the decision to combine The Nicolson Institute and Lews Castle School.

It was agreed to:

(1) note the Report by the Director of Corporate Services on Volunteers for Redundancy;

(2) note the assurances by the Depute Director of Education and the Chief Executive that sympathetic consideration will be given to all displaced employees in accordance with good employment practice and that employment law obligations would have primacy over other obligations;

(3) note that pupils would be able to choose academic as well as vocational courses within the proposed streaming system; and

(4) recommend that the sum of £5000 be allocated from the Salaries Budget 1999/2000 to enable services, relevant to the Vocational Sector, to be `bought in' on an advisory basis as determined by the Head Teacher.
