Issues Raised during Discussion with Community Planning Partners 30 October 2002.
· The analysis was generally agreed
· Labourforce shortages (Aquaculture Industry currently employing backpackers). Difficulty in attracting professional/managerial staff to islands.
· Possibility of 200 additional jobs in Salmon Farming if workforce available.
· Lack of understanding between industry and regulatory authorities
· Need for Economic development.
· Comhairle should be taking a lead in addressing issues
· The main issues concerned the need to investigate reasons (why) for the loss of 18 - 24 age group, possibities include:
a) problems in finding suitable/affordable housing
b) image of remoteness/lifestyle issues
c) transport problems
d) workforce attracted by high wages on mainland
e) educational aspirations of parents leading to shortage of skilled tradesmen
f) education system on islands could be more geared towards meeting needs of local industries
The Aquaculture Industry provided the attached Appendix summarising the recommendations arising form a meeting of the LEF Barriers Sub Group
