Transportation Sub-Committee T01.02

4

The Minute of Meeting of 21 February 2001 was approved.

ROAD SAFETY

Request for Extension of 30mph Speed Limit at Bakers Road T09.03

5

The Director of Technical Service submitted a Report concerning a request for an extension of the existing 30mph speed limit to Bakers Road, Newmarket, Stornoway. The section of road in question was single track with soft verges which provided limited pedestrian provision. There was dense housing on both sides of the roads and increased village activity in these areas.

It was agreed that the Director of Technical Services be authorised to implement a 30mph speed limit extension to cover the entire loop through Bakers Road, thus providing a 30mph speed limit throughout the area.

Arising from consideration of this item it was agreed that the Director of Technical Services would submit a Report to a future meeting outlining the various traffic calming methods, with specific reference to signage, which the Comhairle could introduce.

Request for a 40mph Speed Limit on the A866, Braighe Road T09.03

6

The Director of Technical Services submitted a Report concerning a request for a 40mph speed limit on a section of the Braighe Road where house accesses came onto the main road. The Report indicated that the section of the A866 in question was a good section of double track road with a well engineered vertical and horizontal alignments. The Report further indicated that a speed survey carried out indicated that the speed limit would not be appropriate in terms of the Scottish Executive's guidelines.

It was agreed to recommend that the Director of Technical Services, in consultation with the police, be authorised to introduce traffic calming measures on the A866 at Braighe Road.

Request to Extend the 40mph Speed Limit at Aignish, Isle of Lewis T09.03

7

The Director of Technical Service submitted a Report concerning a request to extend an existing 40mph speed limit on the main section of the A866 between Aignish and Seaview Knock to the side roads at Aignish. The section of road in question was single track with soft verges which provided only limited pedestrian provision. There was dense housing on the side roads and increased village activity in these areas.

It was agreed that the Director of Technical Services be authorised to introduce a 40mph speed limit extension to cover the side roads that join the main A866 between Aignish and Seaview Knock, thus providing the entire area with a 40mph speed limit.

Arising out of consideration of this item it was agreed that the Director of Technical Services, in consultation with the police, would submit a Report to a future meeting outlining the effect in respect of road safety that previous speed limits have had.
