Development Management (Planning Applications)
Central to the planning system is the requirement to obtain Planning Permission for development of land, unless consent is deemed to be granted, by a planning regulation or order. Development is defined as “the carrying out of building, engineering mining or other operations in, on, over or under land or the making of any material change in the use of buildings or other land or the operation of a marine fish farm …”. Details of planning applications received; copies of planning application forms, planning application fees and the Comhairle’s policy on Planning Enforcement can be found here.
Design is a material planning consideration in the assessment of planning applications. Pre-application discussions are particularly important if you are considering building a new house or houses or developing a new industrial or commercial property. All applicants for such developments are strongly encouraged to make an appointment to discuss proposals with a Planning Officer before submitting an application. Ideally these discussions should be in the early stages when possible designs are first being considered. Pre-application discussions can aid in the timeous processing of applications For further information, please view the design criteria set out in the Comhairle’s Design Guide (links below) as well as the Sustainability and Design Section in the Useful Links section.
