The latest young entrepreneur to receive financial assistance from The Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT) is George Shepherd (26), of Liniclate, Benbecula.
Having attained advanced welding qualifications, following several years of practical experience, George set up “Shepherd Engineering” on a trial basis, less than a year ago, to ascertain whether there was a demand for welding and fabrication services in the Uists. It soon became apparent that there was, and he now has six months of work in the pipeline. George subsequently identified additional equipment, which reduces the time to finish each job, enabling the business to become more efficient and offer a wider range of services.

Donald MacLean - PSYBT Regional Chairman in the Western Isles - who was present at the Panel, said
“I commend George on his idea, his confidence and the work he has already done in establishing his business. I am delighted that PSYBT were able to assist George and I would encourage many more young people in the Western Isles to contact PSYBT with their business ideas."
The Uist PSYBT Panel - made up of volunteers from the local business community - met last week to consider George's application for a loan which will enable him to expand his business. They awarded him £4,000 to help him purchase new equipment.
PSYBT also assisted George to prepare a realistic Business Plan & Cash-flow forecasts. He was also successful in securing funding from the Comhairle's Kick Start Loan Scheme, and he has applied to WIE for grant assistance.
Shepherd Engineering offer welding and repair services, sales of welding equipment/consumables and sales of steel and aluminium. They can be contacted on 01870 602280 or 07729 637263.
