MEN'S HEALTH WEEK: 14TH - 20TH JUNE

8 June 2004

National men’s health week is marked each year in the week leading up to and including father’s day 14th - 20th June. This week is an opportunity for health workers to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury.

Comhairle Nan Eilean Siar’s occupational health service has teamed up with SHAW ‘Scotland’s Health At Work’ to organise a week of events based on health activities for the Comhairle’s male employees. The week’s events include individual health checks, fitness testing, relaxation massage and a football tournament.

The aim of men’s health week is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease amongst men and boys. Men’s health week also aims to encourage more men to take personal control of their life and to live life to the full.

Scottish Statistics:

Men die six years younger than woman
Men are four times more likely than women to commit suicide.
Men are more likely than women to be addicted to drugs or alcohol
