COMHAIRLE ACTS ON EVALUATION OF CHILD PROTECTION CASE

13 July 2004

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has started an evaluation and analysis of its systems and procedures. The Comhairle had agreed last November that this would be the procedure following the end of the recent Child Protection case. Last week the Crown Office took the decision that there would be no further proceedings.

As one of the initial stages of the process, the Comhairle has invited the Social Work Services Inspectorate (SWSI) to play a role in independently analysing the involvement of the local authority and work will start on that later this week. The SWSI report will come back to the Child Protection Committee next month which will make recommendations for any further process.

Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Alex MacDonald said: “The Comhairle had agreed last November that an evaluation and analysis would be carried out at the conclusion of the Child Protection case. This is in line with the Comhairle’s aim of continuous development in delivering responsibilities for children’s services. Work on this will be starting this week and then the SWSI will be reporting in the first instance to the Child Protection Committee.”
