There will be an opportunity to learn the ancient skill of creelmaking
at a workshop in Uig in the near future.
In the past traditional creels were plentiful in the villages
in the Island of Lewis. The creels were used in each home for
carrying home the peats from the peatbank, taking seaweed from
the shore, hauling gravel and stones and many other tasks.
Today the creel is symbolic of past generations who worked hard
to eke a living from the land. Nowadays very few people have the
skill to make the creels, as the knowledge was passed down through
the generations and taught by example.
