TOLSTA SCHOOL

21 July 2004

Routine work at Tolsta School has been stopped to allow the Comhairle’s Asbestos Manager to advise on the best way of dealing with traces of asbestos, which have been identified in the premises.

The work involved electrical rewiring and the installation of a new ventilation system.
Specialist electrical consultants have been engaged to give advice on the best way of carrying out the work in the safest manner possible.

In line with Health and Safety procedures the site has now been closed until the consultants arrive later this week.

Pupils and staff are currently on holiday and a letter is being sent to all parents and guardians informing them of the measures the Comhairle is taking.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Director of Corporate Services, Helen Froud, said; “It is not unusual for asbestos to be found in buildings of this age but our overriding concern is the safety of those using the site. We have followed Health and Safety procedures and will await the advice of the specialist consultants. At this stage it is anticipated that the work can restart soon and will be completed before the school is scheduled to start after the summer holidays”.
