| The Western Isles is to benefit from a grant of over £25m from the strategic Waste Fund to increase recycling and diversion of waste from landfill. The funding will create more than 20 jobs in the Islands.
The money will allow the Comhairle to build the process facilities, including two bio-waste treatment plants, and collection infrastructures necessary to meet the recycling targets set in the EU Landfill Directive and the Western Isles Area Waste Plan.
The announcement of the grant funding was made in Stornoway today by Ross Finnie, Minister for Environment and Rural Development.
Cllr. Angus Nicolson, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Chairman of Environmental Services, said: "We are very grateful to the Minister for the grant which we is being announced today. The Comhairle has been committed to improving waste management for many years, and this is the culmination of our efforts. We can now accelerate our plans to continue to improve the recycling and composting infrastructure for a better environment for everyone. This is a significant move forward on sustainability whilst providing long-term local employment. I am very proud of the very hard work of all the officers involved in this development, and wish to pay tribute to them."
