Trading Standards are issuing a warning concerning letters which businesses in the islands have been receiving regarding new money laundering and proceeds of crime legislation.
The official looking letters state the penalties for non-compliance with the law and request a payment of £75 per employee for a compliance pack.
A spokesperson for the Comhairle said: “Our advice to businesses is that this notice has not been sent by an official government agency and you are not obliged to send any money.”
Under the new legislation there are some obligations on business to ensure that their employees are aware of money laundering regulations and training in some cases may be appropriate.
Any businesses who have paid should contact Trading Standards on 709577.
