CONSULTANTS STUDY LEWS CASTLE POTENTIAL

22 September 2004

A consultant team led by Austin-Smith:Lord and Tourism Resources Company has been appointed to undertake a detailed feasibility study of Lews Castle.

The three-month study commissioned by Comhairle nan Eilean Siarand costing £47,000 will involve a comprehensive appraisal of the options for the future use of the Castle.

Tourism Resources Company will explore market opportunities and undertake wide-ranging consultations with stakeholders and interested parties. This will be supported by detailed condition surveys by a specialist technical team led by Austin Smith Lord to establish the likely costs of repair, refurbishment or renewal of the A-Listed building.

The consultants will report their findings and recommendations to the Lews Castle Trust Steering Group in two stages, with the final report expected by December 2004.

The design team has worked on a range of similar challenging projects including the Greenock Sugar Warehouses and the Victoria Baths, winner of the 2003 BBC 2 Restoration programme.
