Dog owners who allow their dogs to foul in public places face fixed penalty fines of £40, rising to £60 if not paid within 28 days.
In addition dogs out on their own are likely to be seized and taken to the kennels. There is a fixed penalty of £25.00 before the dog can be returned to its owner, plus an £8.00 per night kennelling fee.
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Northern Constabulary are actively patrolling problem areas in the Western Isles.
The Comhairle launched a high profile campaign earlier in the year to remind people of the nuisance and health risks of dog fouling.
A spokesperson said: “Whilst the campaign has been reasonably successful and the vast majority of dog owners act responsibly in clearing up after their dog there are still some people who do not. We will take enforcement action against those who allow their dogs to foul in public places including imposing a fixed penalty of £40 rising to £60 if not paid within 28 days”.
