Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has backed calls for increased funding for Gaelic Broadcasting. Cllr Norman A. Macdonald, Chairman of the Western Isles Gaelic Language and Culture Forum, said: “Gaelic broadcasting has a pivotal role to play in the enhancement and revitalisation of the Gaelic language but delivering a quality Gaelic broadcasting service cannot be achieved without adequate resources. It is desirable and in the national interest, on grounds of social justice and cultural diversity, that the Gaelic speaking audience should be served by a broadcasting system appropriate to the 21st Century. The government has the opportunity to demonstrate its support for Gaelic and Gaelic broadcasting by providing index linked funding to ensure that Gaelic broadcasters can meet the needs and aspirations of the Gaelic community with the provision of a quality broadcasting service.”
