| Members
of the public will have the opportunity of a preview of the new
Lewis Sports Centre on Thursday 21st October as the BBC’s
Antiques Roadshow is staged in the Western Isles for the first time
ever.
The day long event is being held in Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s
£6.5m new Sports Centre in Stornoway. Whilst the Centre
will not open to the public for a while yet, every effort has
been made to get it to a stage of readiness for the filming of
the BBC’s programme. Chairman of Arts and Leisure, Cllr
Calum Graham, said:
“Ionad Spòrs Leòdhais will be a first class
leisure facility - one of the best in Scotland. This is a major
event and shows that it is not just a sports centre but a leisure
facility capable of holding concerts and other big events attracting
large crowds”.
The Comhairle car park is closed to staff on the day to make
it available for public use. The Comhairle is operating a park
and ride scheme for its staff to get into and home from work on
the day. A spokesperson for the Comhairle said: “Hopefully
there will be sufficient parking for the numbers of people that
will be attending at any one time but this is an all day event
and it’ll be easier for everyone if people are arriving
and leaving throughout the day rather than everyone being there
first thing in the morning or all at lunchtime. The BBC have said
that as long as people are in the building before 4.30pm their
antiques will be seen by the experts. If you do turn up and there
are no parking spaces the best thing is simply to come back later.
We should also remind people that although the hall will be open
all other facilities in the centre will be closed including the
café, creche and soft play”.
The Antiques Roadshow is on from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Anyone attending
the event should note that queuing will be at the main entrance
of the sports centre with access from the Comhairle car park.
