Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s new £6.5m sports centre, Ionad Spòrs Leòdhais, is set to open its doors to the public on Monday 13 December. Almost all the facilities will be available except for the creche and the café which will come into operation early in the New Year.
The announcement was made at a meeting of the Arts and Leisure Committee. Chairman Cllr Calum Graham said: “A key task of the Comhairle was to build a new sports centre for Lewis and I am pleased to say that what is one of the best sports and leisure facilities in Scotland will be open from next Monday. The sports centre will be an important asset for Lewis and will help to improve the health of our communities. It also provides a regional venue capable of hosting major sports tournaments”.
The sports centre has a 6 court games hall, Studio space, 25m swimming pool, toddler pool, soft play area, Climbing Wall, Fitness Suite, 2 squash courts and a Health suite incorporating a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.
The spacious six court games hall has been designed to accommodate high profile events such as tournaments and concerts. In order to host successful events the Comhairle has invested in comfortable bleacher seating units to provide seating for 526. The units will be available for all types of events and can be configured as appropriate for the viewing requirements of audiences or spectators. With a view to further enhancing the quality of the facility as a major events venue, acoustic panelling and specialist flooring have been included in the construction.
Ionad Spòrs Leòdhais was recently the venue for the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow, attracting 1500 people over the course of the day.
Opening hours for the centre are 8am - 10pm Mon - Fri and 9am - 8pm on a Saturday.
