Caution Urged As Severe Weather Moves Into Isles 10 January 2006

Severe weather is expected to hit the Western Isles over the next few days. The Met Office has issued a warning that between 6pm and midnight tonight there will be strong winds gusting from the South to South West up to 80mph. Locally in the north of Lewis it is possible that winds will gusts to 90mph.

Ferry travel has been severely restricted for the rest of the day and schools are closed for the afternoon in parts of the Southern Isles.

The worst of the winds will be between 10pm and midnight and by tomorrow the weather should be clear. However, the winds are forecast to return on both Thursday and Sunday.

People are advised to avoid travel unless essential between 10pm and midnight tonight. It is likely that some scheduled bus services may be restricted late on this evening.

Ionad Spors Leodhais and Harris Sports Centre will be closing at 8pm tonight whilst facilities at Shawbost, Lionel, Lionacleit and Castlebay are all closed.

There will be heavy rain for the rest of the afternoon and the public are urged to take care with travel. Road safety will be monitored by Northern Constabulary and the Comhairle and updated information will be sent to local radio stations.

Where it is safe to do so, people are advised to ensure that loose material, refuse bins and other moveable objects are placed under cover.
