Stornoway Abattoir is now qualified to slaughter Over Thirty Month (OTM) cattle, becoming the only such facility in the North and North East of Scotland with this qualification. As a result the abattoir will be remaining open, for OTM killing only, until 3 February. The abattoir is qualified to offer a complete OTM service, including cutting.
The qualification adds to an impressive year for the abattoir which has also recently had its Quality Meats Scotland accreditation upgraded.
Throughput at the facility has exceeded the previous year, particularly cattle and pig numbers with the throughput of pigs almost doubling:

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Chairman of Sustainable Development, Cllr Archie Campbell, said: “The abattoir has established itself as a first rate facility providing an excellent service to the crofting community. The OTM qualification means that the abattoir is likely to attract custom from throughout the north of Scotland. The Comhairle is committed to providing slaughtering services throughout the islands and these improvements in service at the Stornoway facility are a reflection of that commitment”.
The abattoir is currently aiming for a licence for the slaughter of organically bred cattle which would add to the services the facility provides.
