New Community Centre for Tiumpan 20 January 2006

The official opening of the new £250K Tiumpanhead Community Centre takes place tonight, Friday 20 January 2006 at 7.30pm. The Centre is adjacent to Aird School in Point and is accessed via the Flesherin township road. A warm welcome is extended to all residents within the Tiumpan area to come and see the new facility.

The splendid new facility is the result of three years of tireless work by the dedicated Tiumpanhead Community Association. The finished building comprises a Youth Drop-in Area, state of the art kitchens, meeting rooms, community café facilities, internet facilities and links to a beautiful community garden and area for reflection.

Commenting on the new Centre, Tiumpan Community Assocation Chairman, Donald C Taylor said, "This new building is a fantastic achievement for a small community group. The quality of the facility reflects the dedication of our committee and the local community and we have to record our thanks to our funders - Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, the Scottish Executive, the Better Neighbourhood Services Fund and Western Isles Enterprise. The circle was completed by a vigorous fundraising programme undertaken by the Committee."

Local Councillor, Donald John MacSween, added, "This is a Community Centre in the truest sense of the phrase - it contains facilities for the old and the young and represents a friendly environment for the community to meet and share their experiences on a daily basis. It can accommodate functions and has the potential to be a real hub for community life. In a day of increasing individualism when people increasingly interact only with their TV sets, this new facility encourages the community to regain lost opportunities to socialise in the time honoured island way. I am delighted that the work of the committee has been rewarded with this excellent new resource and I would encourage every member of the community to call it their own and to use it to the full".
