The Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Mr Alex Macdonald has paid tribute to Rev Donald MacAulay OBE, whose death at the age of 79 was announced today.
Rev MacAulay, who was born in Bernera became the first Convener of Western Isles Island Council in 1974. He was awarded the OBE in 1981 and was made an Honorary Freeman of the Western Isles in 2004.
Mr Macdonald said:
“This is a deep loss for the islands and I am extremely saddened by the news. Rev MacAulay was a thorough gentleman, highly respected by everyone in the Western Isles. As the first Convener of Western Isles Island Council, he was a pioneer in many ways and the example he gave us and the leadership he provided set a course for years to follow. My thoughts and those of my colleagues on the Comhairle are with his family at this sad time.”
