| The beaches of Harris and Cannes may not have much in common but this year the Outer Hebrides featured at the world’s premier film festival in the South of France.
Film production company Whisky Galore Films Ltd. And Sgian Dubh Productions Ltd. Mounted an impressive showcase of the Outer Hebrides at the Cannes Film Festival as part of a campaign to promote the filming of a new version of Whisky Galore in the Islands.
Dozens of Outer Hebrides products featured at the world famous festival where filmstars, journalists and photographers gather. Products on show at Cannes included haggis, black pudding, smoked salmon, herring, langoustine, salmon pate, oatcakes and tablet. As well as the food there was a promotion of Artwork, CDs, books and other products from the islands.
Iain Maclean a producer with Whisky Galore Films said: "We are very thankful for all the products and services that have been donated towards this event and hope that it will definitely bring the taste, sights and sounds of the Islands to the festival in a manner that will show the true unspoilt light of the Western Isles of Scotland in all its glory in a way that will benefit all that contributed. We would like to thank all the companies and individuals that have helped us make this event possible"
Angus Campbell, Vice-Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and a Board Member of Scottish Highlands and Islands Film Commission, said:
“This was a wonderful opportunity to promote the islands to a massive audience. The Whisky Galore story is known throughout the world and the film will provide an opportunity for many people to see the beauty of our Islands. In the meantime this promotion will, quite literally, have given people a taste of the high quality products the Outer Hebrides have to offer. Hopefully it may even make some people decide to visit the Islands.”
Whisky Galore tells the story of the ship, the SS Politician, that in 1941 ran aground at Eriskay and the subsequent ‘rescuing’ by Islanders of the whisky that made up the ship’s cargo. The Compton Mackenzie novel was the basis for a classic Ealing comedy filmed in Barra in 1949. Now Whisky Galore Films Ltd. And Sgian Dubh Productions Ltd. are set to produce a modern version of the film and plan to start shooting this summer in the Islands.
The Outer Hebrides is fast becoming a favoured film making location. Previous films to have been shot in the Islands include ‘The Rocket Post’ and even a brief part of the Harry Potter films. A number of TV productions are also scheduled to be filmed in the islands over the summer.
