At the end of last year Western Isles Credit Union launched a competition to win 2 weekend tickets to T-in the Park 2006, together with a tent which was kindly donated by Sportsworld.
One lucky winner was chosen at random from the 610 Expressions of Interest Forms returned. Judith Hunter who is from Grimsay in North Uist will be heading to the sell out festival in Balado by Kinross in July.
Diane Macpherson, Vice Chairperson of the Credit Union Board of Directors, who drew the winning form, said “We decided to run a competition to encourage people to express their interest in the idea of a Credit Union being established in the Western Isles. Our initial target was 500 forms but we quickly surpassed that. I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to complete a form. Without their support, we would not have been able to get the project off the ground properly.”
An application for authorisation has now been sent to the Financial Services Authority and it is hoped that the Credit Union will open its doors in early October 2006.
Alison MacCorquodale, Credit Union Project Manager, said “It has been an intensive few months to get the project to this stage. We are confident however that we have presented the FSA with a robust application and business plan. We will be contacting people very soon with further information about how to go about joining the Credit Union.”
The Western Isles Credit Union will offer all those who live or work in the Western Isles a convenient way to save and a sensible choice for borrowing. As there are no outside shareholders to pay, the money remains within the community.

A credit union is a democratic, financial co-operative owned and controlled by its members. It provides them with accessible savings, low cost loans and other financial services. Credit unions operate solely for the benefit of their members and as such, can benefit individuals and the community as a whole.
