A promotion of Outer Hebrides products at the Cannes Film Festival has paid off for at least one company in the Islands.
Last month, Outer Hebrides products and goods were showcased at the world famous film festival as part of a promotion of the forthcoming remake of Whisky Galore.
MacLean’s Bakery, based in Benbecula, sent oatcakes to the Festival and has since received new orders – from Dunoon!
A spokesperson for the company said: “It is perhaps surprising that these new orders have come from a Scottish based outlet but it is nevertheless very welcome. The lady who phoned us said she had been in Cannes and enjoyed our oatcakes so much that she decided to order 6 cases of oatcakes for her hotel. We didn’t previously supply anyone in that area of Scotland so this is good news!”.
Dozens of Outer Hebrides products featured at the world famous festival where filmstars, journalists and photographers gathered. Products on show at Cannes included books, C.D.’s, artwork, Hebridean Huggies, Hebridean Soap, Harris Tweed items, knitwear, smoked salmon, langoustine, oatcakes and tablet, along with other products from the area.
Angus Campbell, Vice-Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and a Board Member of Scottish Highlands and Islands Film Commission (www.scotfilm.org), said:
“I am pleased that this marketing of the Outer Hebrides paid off and that the promotion organised by the Scottish Highlands and Islands Film Commission was recognised as one of the highlights of the Cannes Festival. The remaking of Whisky Galore will be a further opportunity for marketing the Islands to an international audience”.
Whisky Galore tells the story of the ship, the SS Politician, that in 1941 ran aground and the subsequent ‘rescuing’ by Islanders of the whisky that made up the ship’s cargo. The Compton Mackenzie novel was the basis for a classic Ealing comedy filmed in Barra in 1949. Now Whisky Galore Films Ltd. And Sgian Dubh Productions Ltd. are intending to produce a modern version of the film.
