Responding to an announcement from Finance Minister Tom McCabe of £432k of funding for work on roads in South Uist, the Vice-Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Cllr Angus Campbell, said:

“This is good news for South Uist and for the Western Isles. It has been a long and hard task to get here but I am delighted that the effort put in has paid off. We were determined to pursue this matter but we had to build the arguments, then gather and present the evidence to persuade the Scottish Executive of the validity of our case. I am pleased that we went about this in the right way and that we have been successful in securing this additional money which will be used to make non public routes safe for use in emergency conditions such as those which occurred in January 1995”..
