A Comhairle spokesperson said: “This is obviously a matter of deep concern and the Comhairle is co-operating fully with all of the other agencies involved in providing any information which may be of assistance.

“Our thoughts are with the family at what is a very difficult time for them and we would urge the media to respect their wishes for privacy at this stage.”

Nicolson Institute Headteacher Derek Curran said: “Molly was a new pupil at the school having transferred recently and she is a valued member of our school community. We are talking to her friends and fellow pupils today and where required we will be making support procedures available.”
