"This is a shocking and tragic incident for the school and for the wider community. John Ross MacKenzie was a quiet, well liked student in his fourth year at the Nicolson Institute where he was studying a range of National Qualifications. Practical subjects at school and in college were what he enjoyed most.
He had just completed a very successful work experience placement where he was highly praised for his work ethic and joinery skills. His employers’ comment that " it would be a pleasure to have and teach him as an apprentice" encapsulates John Ross's love for practical work. John Ross settled well into the working environment in his placement as he had into school life, getting on well with those around him. He had been working to secure a place as an apprentice when he left school next summer.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and the school’s thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends at this very difficult and sad time.
The school will be concentrating over the next few days on supporting staff and students when they return on Thursday".
