The Creative Industries sector in the Outer Hebrides will be the focus of attention next week as a new strategy aimed at supporting the growth and development of the industry is launched.
Everyone with an interest in the promotion and development of the media, new media and other sectors in the creative industries are welcome to attend the launches, taking place from 7-9pm at An Lanntair Arts Centre in Stornoway on Tuesday 19th December and on Wednesday 20th December from 7-9pm at Taigh Chearsabhagh, Lochmaddy.
Key sectors of the Creative Industries include arts, crafts, film and television, publishing and new media. The strategy is outlined in http://www.cne-siar.gov.uk/eds/creativeindustries/index.htm
Archie Campbell, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Chairman of Sustainable Development, said: “The ‘creative industries’ make a significant contribution to the economy of the islands and this strategy sets out the approach that the Comhairle and WIE will take to supporting its continued growth.”
The events are being organised by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and Western Isles Enterprise together with the Scottish Highlands and Islands Film Commission (www.scotfilm.org).
Creative industry companies are invited to submit advertising material which will then be distributed as part of a promotional pack for the launch.
The launch events will have a particular focus on the media and new media sector, and will feature screenings of a selection of short films and documentaries inspired by the Outer Hebrides. Films being shown include Hidden Gifts, a documentary on Angus MacPhee, the weaver of grass from South Uist, and a range of short films by locally based media companies and arts organisations.
A spokesperson for the events, said; “In addition to the launch of the strategy, these events will provide a networking opportunity for businesses and freelancers, promote companies and facilities in the islands, and provide a platform for discussing some of the challenges and opportunities faced by the media and new media sector in the Outer Hebrides.”
If you would like to attend either of the launches, or pass on information about your business, please contact Anne Murray, Economic Development Officer, amurray@cne-siar.gov.uk 01851 709277.
