A new partnership to support research and development activity in the Outer Hebrides was launched this week by Lews Castle College UHI, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Western Isles Enterprise and NHS Western Isles.
Research Hebrides aims to promote the Outer Hebrides as a location for research and development activity, add value to existing activity and ensure a proactive and co-ordinated response to research opportunities within the islands.
Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Alex Macdonald said, “There is a range of ground-breaking research being carried out in the public and private sector in the Outer Hebrides, including in the areas of renewable energy, healthcare, learning systems and biotechnology. This project will ensure that we maximise the economic impacts of this activity and respond well to new areas of opportunity as they arise.”
Research and development, and the commercialisation of research, have key roles to play in achieving economic viability and sustainability. The development of research capacity and the knowledge economy is a key focus identified in the ‘Creating Communities of the Future’ economic regeneration strategy for the Western Isles.
Research Hebrides will have an additional focus on promoting research and development activity in three areas where the Outer Hebrides have an innovative agenda and competitive advantage. These are: Renewable Energy Innovation; Rural Health & Social Care and Gaelic Art, Culture & Heritage.
Lews Castle College UHI will act as the base for Research Hebrides, building on its role as a hub for research and development activity in the Outer Hebrides.
