Welcoming an announcement from Culture Minister Patricia Ferguson of £3m towards a Gaelic Digital Channel, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Vice-Convener, Angus Campbell, said:
“The Comhairle is committed to promoting and developing the Gaelic language and this is very welcome news. Credit is due to the Minister, our MSP and all those who are working towards the proposal for a Gaelic TV Channel. A dedicated Gaelic service offers a unique opportunity to support the language whilst providing skilled jobs. It makes sense to locate the channel in the heartland of the Gaelic language where there is considerable experience and skills in the media sector and developed media facilities. Too many of our young people who have media skills are forced to leave the Islands to find employment. It is time to provide them with opportunities here where Gaelic is a central part of our communities”.
