Trading Standards Officers from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar are alerting consumers about a company telephoning households giving the impression of representing Sky TV.
One local consumer was told by the caller that his Sky equipment warranty was about to expire. He was then asked to provide either bank account or credit card details in order for the cover to continue. Fortunately the consumer knew that his satellite equipment was fairly new and not out of warranty and did not give any payment details. Also when asked, the caller could not supply the name of a local engineer who would carry out warranty work in the Western Isles.
Trading Standards is advising Consumers who are interested in extended warranties to ask the callers to send them written details of any offers. This allows an opportunity to compare deals with other companies supplying similar goods and services. Trading standards also advise not to give personal and financial details over the phone to companies they have not dealt with before.
