Personal Information Phone Calls
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is warning consumers to beware of phone calls from callers claiming to represent banks and wanting to update personal information such as pin numbers, dates of birth and maiden names. Banks and other reputable financial institutions do not phone for this kind of information.
Consumers are also advised to be careful when disposing of bank and till receipts which may contain information on account numbers.
Doorstep Sellers
Trading Standards and the Police are alerting consumers that several doorstep sellers are operating in Lewis, currently mainly around the Stornoway and the Broad Bay area. Trading Standards in partnership with the Northern Constabulary and Faire the Community Alarm Care line will next month begin to distribute Doorstoppers packs to Householders in the Western Isles. The packs will contain information on your rights when buying from doorstep sellers, along with a window sticker which you can display if you do not want doorstep sellers to call at your home.
