Comhairle "Delighted" with Harris Tweed Developments 2 November 2007

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has expressed its support for the latest positive developments in the Harris Tweed industry. This follows the announcement that the former KM Group tweed mill in Shawbost is to re-open shortly under the ownership of a new company - Harris Tweed Hebrides - and begin production.

Archie Campbell, Chairman of Sustainable Development, stated:

“I am delighted that Shawbost mill will once again soon be producing Harris Tweed.“

“Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is committed to supporting the development of the Harris Tweed industry, and we are heartened by recent discussions with both new and existing producers regarding their ambitious plans for Harris Tweed to take its place at the cutting-edge of the textiles industry throughout the world once again.“

Vice-Convener Angus Campbell said:

“This is very good news. The new jobs created as a result of this investment will bring a significant boost to the local economy.  The Comhairle looks forward to playing its part in helping to revive the industry and trusts that partners will also do so.  It will be essential that over the next period there is a concerted effort to consolidate the marketing of the industry.  We need to work together to ensure Harris Tweed is marketed as a high quality brand throughout the world.  To that end the Comhairle will shortly call a meeting to bring together the local industry, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and the Harris Tweed Authority (HTA) to ensure a cohesive, positive, forward looking approach to the marketing of the industry.”
