Moves to boost the economy of the Western Isles and the Highlands by securing contracts arising from a proposed windfarm have been welcomed by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
A team of contractors led by Highlands Alternative Energy Ltd (HAEL) seeks to maximise the economic benefits for the Western Isles and the Highlands arising from Lewis Windpower’s proposed 181 turbine windfarm.
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Vice-Convener Angus Campbell, said: ‘The Comhairle has always believed that the socio-economic benefits of the Lewis Windpower project would be considerable. This agreement backs that up and is a very welcome move to securing the economic benefits for the Western Isles and the Highlands of Scotland. We are pleased that local business supports the views of the Comhairle in approving the scheme, recognizing the considerable potential input to the Western Isles economy. The renewable energy resources of the Western Isles offer the exciting prospect of playing a major part in sustaining the economic future of our communities.’
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has given its approval for the windfarm scheme and a decision is awaited from the Scottish Government on the application.
