Responding to the agreement announced today between Lewis Wind Power and REpower UK regarding the manufacture of turbines at Arnish, the Vice-Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Mr Angus Campbell, said: “This is very welcome news for the Western Isles and I congratulate all those involved who have overcome formidable obstacles to pave the way for turbine towers manufacture at Arnish. When the Comhairle launched the Energy Innovation Zone we were convinced there was a massive opportunity for the Western Isles to capitalise on renewable energy developments. Central to that strategy was the development of Arnish as a renewables producing plant. Realising this opportunity is now within reach but we need one more piece to fall into place – the go ahead for the LWP windfarm project. I would now urge the Minister to make this happen. Approval of the project will demonstrate the Scottish Government’s commitment to a sustainable future for the Western Isles, their dedication to progress towards renewable energy targets and their determination to make Scotland the renewables centre of Europe.”
