Trading Standards Warning 18 January 2008

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar's Trading Standards officers are warning consumers to be aware of £50 000 Prize Postcode letters which are currently circulating in the Western Isles.

The letters claim that you have been chosen to receive a prize of up to £50 000 and to call or text a number to claim your reward.

The small print states that you are charged at premium rates for calling the number (£1.50 per minute for up to 7 minutes) and that if you text  to claim, using your mobile, that you are agreeing to subscribe to another  £2.00 per week prize draw, plus the  network charges.  The small print also states that you will also be charged a further processing fee in order to win a prize!

A spokesperson warned consumers 'our best advice is to bin this letter. Even if you attempt to claim a prize it will have already cost you in the order of at least £14, and it certainly looks as though the value of some of the listed prizes will be worth much less than this!'
