DOGFOULING CAMPAIGN PAYING OFF 05 February 2008

Following some intense advertising and an increase in patrols by the Community Wardens, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is pleased to report that there has been a reduction in the amount of dog faeces visible on the streets of Stornoway and in the Castle Grounds.

In addition, during their patrols the Wardens have noticed very few straying dogs.
People have generally welcomed the campaign on dogfouling, which gives rise to many of the complaints received by the Environmental Health section of the Comhairle.

Two fixed penalty notices, requiring the payment of a £40.00 fine have been served on people failing to clear up after their dogs, and two warning letters have been sent to owners of straying dogs. However most people are getting the message about being responsible dog owners.

Cllr Charlie Nicolson said: "I am very pleased the campaign is paying off and it is important for all owners to continue in responsible dog ownership to help make the local environment safer and cleaner.”

The campaign will continuing, encouraging responsible dog owners to clear up after their animals, and to properly dispose of the waste.

Remember, you can use any public litter bin, not just designated dog bins.  Free poop scoop bags and information leaflets are available from Comhairle offices, libraries, Hebridean Housing Partnership offices and many other places.
